Stop being misguided by what your hair can do!

In a time where celebrities have a different hair color every the paparazzi snaps a photo of them or they grace a red carpet, naturally the masses are going to want the "Look" and many will go to great lengths to achieve it. A quick call to your local salon and your off to get that platinum blonde or silver grey color for your coifs! You leave the salon, you hair looks great and then a week or two later, its shedding, dry, and looks nothing like what you expected. So what happened?

Far too often, everyday women are misinformed on what their hair can actually do. To understand hair, you have to know the science that goes along with it. Clients thinks its as easy as pulling out a box of hair color and applying it. Anyone who's a hair stylist know that is the farthest thing from the truth.

When you are considering an extreme hair color change you should be sure to do your research and visit multiple stylist with the appropriate questions. Here are some red flags to stay away from!

1. If the stylist has never done your hair and doesn't recommend a consultation.

2. If you ask them to explain the process to achieve your new look and they cant....RUN!

3. If you request photos or references of similar work and they cant/wont/ or don't provide it.

4. If they are unlicensed.

5. If the price is too good to be true. REAL hair care cost. You get what you pay for!

6. If your stylist tell you not to do it, you probably shouldn't!

Here are are a FEW tips to remember when choosing a hair color:

1. Going darker is ALWAYS easier and less damaging.

2. Darker hair shouldn't be lifted more than 4 levels at time.

3. Naturally lighter hair is easier to color bright colors without having to pre-lift.

4. If you wants highlights or Balayage your lightest shade should be no more than 6 shades lighter than your base.

5. Remember if you take your dark hair light it's a commitment that required lots of maintenance. (Deep conditioning, protein, etc)

Its important to understand that ALL hair is not created equally. Some hair can achieve colors and styles that aren't as attainable on others and that's fine. Its your responsibility as a consumer to ask questions and our responsibility as a licensed and educated stylist to educate you on that!

Ms. Lula Hair Review

Ms. Lula Hair Review

Happy Tuesday ladies! Let me just jump right into things! I promised you all a review of the Ms. Lula's Hair my client purchased a few weeks ago, I've waited a little while so that I could give you a review after shampooing/ blow drying & restyling the hair.

Week 1

 Freshly installed and curl

Freshly installed and curl

The hair was extremely soft to the touch, no tangles and no shedding. The natural luster on the hair was very beautiful, however the ends did need to be trimmed upon installation.

Week 2

I didn't see my client at all during week 2, she did however give me an update which she said she had a very little tangling in the morning other than that no major complaints.

Week 3

After shampooing/conditioning and blowdrying I began to curl the hair with a flat-iron at about 450 degrees. What I immediately noticed was that the ends of the hair were extremely dry and brittle after curling. I alerted my client and immediately clip those ends off. My initial thought was to turn down my iron temperature but I generally do 450 heat on all my other hair extensions and have never had this problem. Aside from that there weren't any other major issues with the hair in my opinion. It did seem to have to be curled pretty hard for the curl to remain tight, aside from that no major problem.

Verdict: I think Ms. Lula is a great low-price option for girls who are new to the market, want to try something new and be budget concious- However my seasoned "Weave girls" I can't recommend this to. Anyone who's has worn extensions from some of the more established hair vendors would not be impressed.

New Product Review!

New Product Review!

I've found a product that I have quickly fallen in LOVE with! Hask product line, is a just under 2 year old product company that has made its way from Europe and is now worldwide. They use exotic oils such as macadamia oil, monoi Oil, Argan oil and keratin proteins in there products and are Free of sulfates, parabens, alcohol, gluten, artificial colors and phthalates.

I stumbled upon this product a few weeks ago and decide to use it on a natural hair client of mine. I was immediately taken in by the tropical scent of the coconut oil nourishing shampoo. It had a wonderful lather and left the hair feeling soft and clean. I then conditioned, combed through and rinsed revealing an even more subtle softness!

Hask Coconut Oil shampoo & conditioner

As a stylist, I know that some products work great on some hair and just so-so on others so I had to try it out on more of my clients. The timing was perfect, I had a client who's struggled with dry hair coming in for her bi-monthly appointment and I decided to again use the Hask Coconut Oil Shampoo and conditioner on her. This time instead of a basic conditioning, after applying I put her under a hooded dryer for 20 minutes. The results were awesome! Soft, supple and shiny hair! I've since used the Hask Coconut,Keratin and Macadamia oil line on at least 10-15 clients and I am quite pleased! The deep conditioner packets smell great and leave the hair moisturized and soft with no heavy residue or buildup.

VERDICT: Must TRY!

Pro: uses exotic natural oils, no sulfates or harsh cleansing agents and leave your hair silky soft and smelling great!

Cons: None!

Want to try it out? Purchase a bottle or set of shampoo&conditioner from me and receive special pricing!

Hope you enjoy! Comment and let us know your thoughts or your experience!

What's going wrong with my weave?

What's going wrong with my weave?

The beauty of hair extensions, when done properly can not only add a boost of confidence to someone struggling to grow their hair but also add length and fullness to ones tresses that are naturally fine or limp. Wearing hair extensions should be easy and should be easy on your hair, giving it a break from the daily styling war which Is why I was very alarmed when I received an email from a new client, in search of a stylist to help here remedy her weave issues!

"Dear Jonathan,

My name is Melissa and I'm looking for someone who can do my hair. I have a mixed textured of hair with very coarse spots in the back and top. I wear a sew-in weave and every time I take it out my hair is coming out more and more. My hairdresser told me it was normal and that I shouldn't worry. The last time I took it out I had sores from the braids on the side and back of my head. My hair use to be shoulder length and now it's Bob length. She told me that the weave would make my hair grow but I haven't seen any growth in over a year. I don't know what to do. Can you please help me, I've read all about you and your reviews are great. You seem to really take care of your clients hair and I need a stylist like you in my life!!! Plz help me! "

After a quick phone conversation with Melissa I was able to quickly identify her issues and I decided to share them with you all because these are very common issues that everyday women who wear extensions deal with!

1. Leaving your install in TOO LONG!!!

Ladies i don't care why kind of extensions you're wearing or what the previous stylist told you, you should not have the same installation in beyond 8 weeks! Everyone who has hair, sheds hair everyday up to 150 strands. If you have a weave sewn-in/ micro-linked or fused in where do you think that hair is going? It's stuck inside your extensions, wrapping around your stronger hair, locking and Matting up, make sense?

2. Improper Installations

this is another issue that I see all too often. Improperly installed extensions can wreck havoc on your hair especially bonding or fusion extensions. Be sure that your stylist is educated in the installation method they are performing and ask for pictures and references if need be. Improper installations can lead to permanent hair loss.

3. Stop being CHEAP!!!

Yes I said it! I said it!! My  hair extension service can range from $300-$1000+. I understand that not everyone can fork over exuberant amounts of money for hair extensions but remember "You get what you pay for" I can't think of any better way to put. If you are getting a service that you know cost $300 for $100 then you better believe the stylist isn't taking their time, paying special attention to your head or concerned about being meticulous and detailed. They have to do 3 people for the price of one so they are trying to get you in and out. Be weary of extremely cheap hair extension services, you're more likely to run into untrained, unskilled and uneducated stylist this way.

Your hair extensions should be an enjoyable experience for you. They should make you feel good about your hair and you should be able to rest assured that your hair is protected and cared for. When you make the decision to get hair extensions it is both yours and your stylist responsibility to work together and maintain them to the highest degree. If you are looking for a trusted stylist email me at info@platinumimagesstyling.com

Hope you enjoy!

Letting your natural texture Shine!

If you were born with natural wavy or curly hair I'm sure you've spent endless hours figuring out how to keep it sleek and straight, maybe even going as far as relaxing it. I myself am guilty of fighting my natural curly hair for a looser texture but not anymore! I've been a natural hair officiando for 10+Years and I love it! Yes it takes work learning about products and figuring out what works for you and nothing beats waking up with your hair flat and smashed on one side and the other perfect plush!

To all of you who are taking a stand against manipulating your hair texture and falling in love with that waves and curls you were born with here are a few tips to give you the best looks possible!!!

1. Ditch the Shampoo!

Yes I said it, ditch the shampoo! Most shampoos have sulfates and harsh salts that can raise the cuticle of your natural curly hair leaving it frizzy and dry. Instead of shampooing your hair daily simply condition your hair- in what naturalista have dubbed as "Co-washing". This will definitely result in a head full of shinier, bouncier curls! When it's time to shampoo be sure to have a sulfate free option available, just don't wash everyday. Fine hair every 2 days, coarser hair can go 3-4 days!

2. "Wet-Style" Your Hair

So many people say, "Oh my hair is sooo pretty when it's wet, but then it dries and its a mess." Prevent your hair from becoming a frizzy-mane by styling you hair when it's still wet. Apply your product to the hair and scrunch in an upward motion to enhance the curls or waves. Apply my favorite, Moroccanoil or a light serum to seal in shine and block out frizz. For more definition in your waves separate your hair into 4 sections and braid it while it's wet. Allow to dry and remove. Be sure to apply moroccanoil before you braid!

3. Get the Perfect Cut!

One of the most important lessons I learned in beauty school is that, "Wet hair lies!", what's even more true is that wet curly hair definitely lies. Wet curls and dry curls have a different spring and bounce to them, some coil more than others and vice versa so it's  best to have your curly hair cut dry so that you get an even cut with no missing spots!!!

4. Stay away drying products

Many hair sprays, mousse and other curl enhancing products have drying agents such as alcohol in them. Stay away from them, they deprive your curls of moisture making them dry and crunchy!

5. Condition AGAIN!

I can't stress the importance of conditioning natural curly and wavy hair. Curlier hair absorbs so much more moisture at the roots, sometimes leaving the ends deprived of moisture. The best way to replenish that moisture is via-conditioning treatments! For deeper moisture penetration apply your conditioner and a plastic processing cap while sitting under the hair dryer for 15 minutes!

6. Diffuse IT!

The diffuser is important when drying your curls because it'll dry them more evenly. Apply a light serum or heat protectant and diffuse from roots, to mid shaft to ends, leave the ends slightly damp.

7. Finger-Style

Allowing your curls and waves to naturally pop is super important. During styling use your fingers and not combs or brushes. Combing or brushing the hair during style will create a huge puff!!! To re-activate curls simply mist it with a 3 parts water and 1 part conditioner mix in a spray bottle!

8. Limit the flat-iron

I learned this lesson the hard way. Too much heat will ruin your curl pattern. If  you notice your curls are dropping after flat-ironing then it's time to lay off the heat!

I hope these 8 tips will give you the curls and waves that you've always dreamt of! Like, Share and comment!!!
